Wireless providers to adopt ratings system

Wireless providers are banding together to adopt a ratings system and underage content blocking for music, video and games geared toward adults.

However, the ratings and blocking will only work with content offered by providers. Anything found and viewed on Web sites via a mobile browser is obviously outside the control of service providers.

“This industry effort should really help families who rely on their cell phones but do not want their children inadvertently exposed to adult material,” said FCC commissioner Jonathan Adelstein in a statement.

The AP notes, however, that the move also is “a sure sign that at least some wireless operators are mulling the potential riches that restricted services might generate.”
