* EMC acquires Tablus
EMC’s RSA Security Division last week bulked up its data classification business with the acquisition of Tablus.
While Tablus’ Content Loss Protection suite is characterized as a security product, it has storage features that fit well with EMC’s InfoScape product. In fact, RSA will combine Tablus’ products with EMC’s InfoScape information management software to create a common platform that lets organizations discover, classify and take policy-based action on all of their data.
Tablus’ software discovers data, monitors and classifies it. Based on rules set by the IT administrator, IT staffers can control the distribution of data to inappropriate places or its access by inappropriate users.
Tablus combined with InfoScape will allow organizations to manage data and retain and archive it for compliance and e-discovery purposes. It will also help customers move storage around and migrate it between tiers of storage.
Its Content Sentinel scans laptops, desktops and network file servers for structured, semistructured and structured data in flight as well as at rest. Rather than collecting the data and transmitting it to a central location, Tablus’ Content Sentinel leaves the data at the source and just transmits the results.
While at first blush the acquisition will let RSA compete with Symantec’s and McAfee’s security products, it will also bring EMC more in line with IBM’s acquisition of Princeton Softech and HP’s acquisition of OuterBay.
The details of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition is expected to be finalized in the fourth quarter.
