* Avtech TemPager checks temperatures
Avtech Software last week introduced an appliance and software that monitors heat in computer rooms and data centers.
The rack-mountable TemPager notifies the IT manager when temperatures rise or fall to extreme levels. The appliance is a 1U-high unit that mounts in the top of the rack and connects to the network via an Ethernet connection. The TemPager has a built-in digital sensor that monitors temperature every two seconds. The front of the appliance has three RJ-11 ports where additional external temperature sensors can connect. Each of these external sensors can be located as much as 100 feet away and are the size of a Bic pen.
It has a Web browser interface for management and an integrated Web server. IT can use any monitoring software to monitor temperature or Avtech’s Pager Enterprise, which is bundled with the TemPager. SNMP is supported as well. Pager supports alerts at different thresholds and to different people. Alerts can be sent to cell phones, pagers, PDAs, through e-mail or to Web pages.
Monitored data from the TemPager can be exported to Microsoft Excel for trend analysis.
Avtech claims that its devices are used in the Pentagon and White House and most recently, Microsoft outfitted its facilities in China with TemPagers.
The product competes with monitoring equipment from NetBotz, which was recently acquired by APC.
The TemPager is available now for $395.
