Intel clears up I/O confusion

I recently wrote about two technologies – I/O Acceleration and Active Management – that Intel introduced at the Intel Developer Forum. Apparently the information Intel gave was unclear.

The company had indicated that I/O Acceleration, which frees up processor cycles, and Active Management, which helps IT administrators manage computers regardless of their state, both run on Intel processors.

Dan Lahrman, superintendent of network administration for NATO, wrote me concerned that these two technologies would contradict each other – I/O Acceleration reduces processor cycles, while Active Management takes up processor cycles.

So I asked Intel about it. It turns out that I/O Acceleration is spread out across chips.

“The I/O Acceleration technology is implemented across three components – the CPU, chipset and Gigabit Ethernet networking component,” says Chad Taggart, director of marketing for advanced technologies at Intel.

Active Management Technology, on the other hand, runs only on the networking component, not on the processor as Intel previously intimated.

Thus, the technologies won’t compete for processor cycles.

Taggart says Active Management Technology is initially designed to manage desktop and laptop computers.

“[AMT’s] purpose is to let IT manage a machine no matter the system’s state, meaning whether the power is on or off or if it has blue-screened,” he says.
