* IBM lands European Linux mainframe deal * Check Point blend ensures remote nodes meet security policies * Another Cisco face-lift? * HP grows Q3 revenue but servers, storage disappoint * Tales from the copy room * Today on Layer 8

Long time IBM watchers must have a good natured laugh when they see headlines like: “IBM announces large mainframe-based Linux win.” Ten years ago such a headline would have been laughed at as some amusing April Fools joke. But not any more. In fact, I would say such announcements are now commonplace.

Long time IBM watchers must have a good natured laugh when they see headlines like: “IBM announces large mainframe-based Linux win.” Ten years ago such a headline would have been laughed at as some amusing April Fools joke. But not any more. In fact, I would say such announcements are now commonplace.

The actual news is that IBM and Endress + Hauser Holding AG, a supplier of instruments for the process engineering industry in Germany, said it would consolidate its SAP AG systems onto two eServer zSeries 990 mainframes running Linux.

IBM did not disclose the value of the deal, but Big Blue said the deal underscores the momentum behind IBM’s mainframe business, noting that its revenue from mainframes has grown over 30% year-on-year for the past three quarters.

For some, Cisco’s recent acquisition of Procket’s intellectual property seems to signal that the network giant has no strategy. What it really signals is that Cisco has too many strategies and that at least some in the company are trying to fix the problem. The question now is whether they can succeed.

HP grows Q3 revenue but servers, storage disappoint

HP today reported solid revenue growth for its fiscal third quarter, boosted by sales in its Personal System Group. However, it said that performance in its Enterprise Servers and Storage group was “unacceptable,” and that it would make immediate management changes.

Tales from the copy room

It wasn’t long ago when the biggest security issue in the photocopier industry was how to keep randy employees from scanning body parts. But times have changed. A new generation of jazzed-up office copiers can scan documents, send faxes or e-mail, and store reams of document images. The new networked machines are akin to modern desktop computers and servers, which makes them more vulnerable to predatory hackers.
