College publishers are fighting Google’s plan to scan gazillion of books into its search engine saying the move amounts to massive copyright infringement. Google says “Not so much.”
The Association of American University Presses is collectively freaking out, worried that having their copyrighted materials available on Google will rob colleges of lucrative licensing cash.
Google says, “Chill out,” noting that A) University publishers can opt out of the program; and B) Even if they did participate, copyrighted materials scanned into Google would only display bibliographic information and a few sentences.
Regardless, we smell a new Copyright Protection Fee being foisted onto the student body.
