AOL gives it all away

AOL is giving it all away – well, most of it – in an attempt to lure people back to its faltering site.

The company is opening up most of its formerly members-only content to drive traffic to the new AOL.com portal, expected to go live to the masses next Tuesday, June 21. In addition, AOL is offering free Web e-mail accounts and will allow anyone to customize their AOL home page. How very 1999 of them.

So why would anyone continue to may $24 a month to remain a subscriber when most everything is available free? Mostly software and support, writes the AP: parental controls; special sections for kids and teens; antivirus and other security programs; and customer support hotlines operating 24 hours a day. Again, why would anyone pay $24 a month for that?
