German airline Lufthansa has launched a two-week trial of encoding passengers’ airline tickets with their thumbprint to increase security and speed check-in.
With the biometric ticket, passengers would be able to check into a kiosk and verify their identity with by placing their thumb on a scanner. Those who prefer to check in the old fashioned way could continue to do so, but Lufthansa officials say the biometric route will be faster.
The German government will start issuing passports embedded with facial data in November; a fingerprint will be added in March 2007.
