The creator and buyers of the Loverspy program, designed to catch your significant other cheating on you, has been indicted for allegedly violating federal computer privacy laws.
Carlos Enrique Perez-Melara, 25, could face 175 years in prison for designing the program, which was disguised as an electronic greeting card. The target would open the e-mail and unwittingly launch a program that would begin recording his or her e-mail messages and Web site history. That info would be sent to computers operated by Perez-Melara and relayed to customers, authorities said.
Perez-Melara was indicted last week on 35 counts of manufacturing, sending and advertising a surreptitious interception device and unauthorized access to protected computers. Four of an estimated 1,000 Loverspy buyers were indicted on two counts each of illegal computer hacking.
