The head of MIT Labs and his own nonprofit One Laptop Per Child effort has detailed a proposed $100 laptop (above, click to enlarge), which could run off a handcrank for power and run on 500-MHs processor, flash memory and Linux. The machines, housed in a rubber casing to be “nearly indestructible,” would also sport 4 USB ports and run off a wireless mesh network.
Negroponte hopes One Laptop Per Child will be able to get 5 million to 15 million of the machines in production within a year, when children in Brazil, China, Egypt, Thailand, South Africa are due to receive them. The following year Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney hopes to start buying them for all 500,000 middle and high-school students in the state.
A prototype is due to debut in November.
