French lawyer uses Web for cheap lawsuits

Double trouble: Jean-Marc Goldnadel is French and a lawyer. Now he’s the bane of the French judicial system since he launched a Web site that lets his countrymen sign up for class-action lawsuits for $14.50.

France is one of a handful of European countries that have recently introduced the concept of class-action suits. Goldnadel’s critics worry that his site, classaction.fr, will lead to a proliferation of junk class-action lawsuits, like those that litter U.S. courts.

“This is grist for our mill,” said Joelle Simon, head of legal affairs at France’s main employers’ organization, Medef. “This is exactly what we don’t want – we have no desire to see this kind of practice become widespread.”

The Paris Bar Council is trying to shut down Goldnadel and his site.
