Yahoo all over the news

The joke around Layer 8 is that we have a template that we use for the weekly Google look-what’s-cool announcement that goes “Google announced X this week. It’s really cool and lets you do Y and Z.” Well, we might have to make one for Yahoo now.

Tired of being trumped by news from its rival, Yahoo has gone a press release spree this week. Today, the company is scheduled to announce a deal with Microsoft to interconnect the two companies instant messaging platforms (only the text messaging part). Good news for those that don’t want to have to run multiple IM clients on their desktop. AOL is still sitting on an island – or contintent, given its market lead – by itself when it comes to IM.

Yesterday, the company announced news that blog headlines would run along side more traditional news in its new news search feature, giving bloggers a bigger head than they have now. And Podcasters get some props too from Yahoo with the company’s new Podcast directory that was announced on Monday. What a week for Yahoo and its only Wednesday.
