AOL data spill’s frightening find

Opinion
Aug 9, 20061 min

The AOL user search data mistakenly released over the weekend didn’t contain customer names, but instead assigned a number to each of the 600,000+ subscribers. So no harm, no foul?

Perhaps, unless you’re User 17556639 who was searching for:

17556639 how to kill your wife

17556639 how to kill your wife

17556639 wife killer

17556639 how to kill a wife

17556639 poop

17556639 dead people

17556639 pictures of dead people

…and it goes on.

Markus Frind, CEO of Plentyoffish.com, discusses possible consequences of this frightening find, including “If people are using AOL to search for ways of killing their spouse what should be done about it?”
