Those who cause auto accidents in DeKalb County, Ga, while on their cell phone will be fined $500 under a new law.
It will affect those cited with “improper” usage of a mobile phone that is determined to be a “contributing factor” in a collision causing death, injury or damage. We think any use of a cell phone while driving should be deemed “improper.”
The cell phone lobby disagrees:
“Any legislation that is aimed at one specific behavior doesn’t put the whole issue of distracted driving in the proper light,” says John Walls, spokesman for the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA). “We were the most common distraction, but we were not the most dangerous distraction.”
